Southern Illinois Healthcare, a nonprofit health care system, operates the flagship 145-bed tertiary-care Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, as well as Herrin Hospital (with 114 beds) and St. Joseph Memorial Hospital (with 25 beds). The hospitals serve residents of across southern Illinois. The nearly 280-bed system provides services such as birthing, cardiac, cancer, and emergency care, as well as surgery and rehabilitation. Its cardiac care is offered through an affiliation with the Prairie Heart Institute at St. John's Hospital  in Springfield, Illinois. The medical school at Southern Illinois University conducts its Family Practice Residency Program at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
